Transport

  • Taxis are an expensive option for airport transfers (around $40 USD). Local buses or shuttles are a good option to get to the city from the airport.

  • To take a local bus, you will need to get a “sube” card as they don’t take cash. Sube cards can be bought at bus/subte (metro) stations or kiosks all over town.
  • One bus ride is 6.25 pesos (33 cents). It doesn’t matter if you get off in 2 stops or 50, it will cost the same.
  • The local metro is called a subte. While it is a good form of transport, buses are more accessible. Sube cards can also be used on the metro.
  • Sube cards can be used in several other metros in Argentina such as Ushuaia and Cordoba.

Food

  • You can not leave BA without trying the empanadas.
  • Beef is very big here as they claim that you get the best beef here and you can find them in parrillas all over.
  • Argentinians love their Dulce de Leche and you find them everywhere, in ice creams, desserts, coffee, etc. In fact they love it so much that they put it in between 2 cookies, dip it in chocolate and call them ‘Alfajores’.
  • Of course you cannot forget the Yerba Mate. This is a kind of tea that you drink out of a cup called the ‘mate’. It is prepared by steeping dried leaves of yerba mate in hot water and is served with a metal straw called ’bombilla’ from a hollowed out calabash gourd. They range from ARS 50 to 400 depending on the material and work put into them. Some of the expensive ones have alpaca silver covering.

Other Tips

  • Yellow Fever vaccinations are free in Argentina. (It costs around $350/person in the US). So do your homework and if you have the time, you can get your shots in Buenos Aires at the office ‘Sanidad De Fronteras’.
